Tschernjachowsk - Insterburg

  • The city was bombed heavily by the British Royal Air Force on July 27, 1944, and stormed by Red Army troops on January 21-22, 1945. Over half of the city was destroyed. The Altmarkt no longer exists, the old Lutheran church survived as ruins but was demolished in the 1970s. However, some of the newer districts in the western part of the city survived mostly intact:

  • Revitalization of ulitsa Kalinina (Forchestrasse). Perhaps the best-preserved street in the former Altstadt:

  • Local authorities plan to restore the Georgenburg castle in the village of Mayovka and transform it into a museum and residence for the Bishop of Chernyakhovsky and Slavsky. The proposed restoration includes a complete renovation of the load-bearing structures in the southwestern wing of the three-story building, repairing damaged stone walls, and both exterior and interior decoration. Additionally, the project involves filling in door and window openings, as well as roof repairs. The ground floor will house an Orthodox church, spaces for religious activities, and areas for historical reconstruction, while the upper floor will be dedicated to an exposition hall.

Die englischsprachigen Wikipedia-Seite meint: „The town was heavily bombed by the British Royal Air Force on July 27, 1944.“

Laut der NY Times: „Two hundred Soviet planes battered the East Prussian industrial city of Insterburg last night…“ (24.April 1943).

„German city of Insterburg City (sic) destroyed after bombing, USSR, Eastern Prussia, 1945.“
